Automated Meter Reading

Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

Advanced meter reading is coming!

Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a state-of-the-art technology that allows us to read your meter remotely. Data is sent directly from your meter to a substation on existing power lines. From the substation the data then travels to Southern Pine's headquarters where it is integrated with the customer information and billing systems, resulting in the production of a timely, accurate bill.

How will you benefit?

  • Increased meter accuracy
  • Improved customer service
  • Voltage monitoring capabilities
  • Increased privacy at home
  • Consistent billing periods
  • Improved outage detection
  • Increased operating efficiencies
  • Remote connects and disconnects

Why is Southern Pine making this change?

As your member-owned cooperative, we are always looking for ways to improve your service now and for the future. The new metering system has numerous member benefits in a variety of area and will prepare us for the electric power industry's fast-paced technological advancement.

Will service be interrupted during the meter change-out?

Yes, you will experience a short, five to ten-minute disruption of power during the meter change. Our contractor will try to provide advance warning to members by knocking on the door, before performing the change-out. (In extreme situations or when consumer-owned equipment requires repairs, there may be longer disruption of service.)

Will the new meter automatically notify Southern Pine when your power goes out?

No, the meters operate on a polling basis and do not immediately notify Southern Pine when an outage occurs. When you have an outage or emergency situation, please continue to call us. The meter will help us verify whether the problem is on your side of the meter or with our service.

How does the new metering system work?

Southern Pine can transfer meter data and usage information from your home or business in about six to ten seconds without running any new cables or wires.

How will this affect your monthly bill?

You will continue to receive billing statements at the same time of the month you currently receive them. No meter reading cycles will change as a result of this new method of reading meters.
